West Bell County carries both of the brush problems Central Texas deals with. Ashe juniper holds the uplands and the ridges, mesquite works the flats and the old pasture, and on a lot of Killeen-area tracts they meet in the middle. The soil under both is shallow, which changes the clearing calculation. A dozer on thin ground over limestone does not just remove the tree, it takes topsoil with it, and thin soil is the one thing a Cut Plain tract cannot spare. Ranching on the Cut Plain is a grass management problem first. Carrying capacity on thin upland soil is modest to begin with, and a closing cedar canopy takes it down further every year.
